This is the follow up blog entry to my previous blog post about Anika’s recent exam week.
Anika’s teacher requested for a meeting with me today.
Apparently, her teacher got worried because Anika got really low scores in her Filipino and Araling Panlipunan trimestral exams. Like, hindi siya pasado.
Ang sakit ng bangs ko.
I actually wanted to cry when I saw Anika’s grades. Parang ako yung bumagsak sa exams. I was so upset. This is personal to me because I perceive Anika as my extension. My therapist told me that I should learn daw to think around it kasi hindi healthy. It will cause unnecessary anxiety. I need to think of solutions to the problem para maresolve yung problem so I will not feel this terrible. That and self mental coaching na if Anika fails at something, it doesn’t automatically mean I’m a bad mother #NoteToOtherMomsOutThere
Anyway, during the meeting kanina, I told the teacher that I can’t understand why Anika’s having low scores now. She had above average grades in first and second grade. A tutor comes to teach her everyday. Ang iba lang is hindi na kasi ako ganun ka-tutok magturo unlike before.
The teacher told me that in Grade 3, the teachers no longer read the exam questions to the students unlike when they were in Grade 1 and 2. Nung Grade 1 and 2, apart from reading the questions, the teachers explains pa the instructions or minsan nagbibigay ng examples. For Filipino subjects, the teachers translate naman the words to English para maintindihan ng students.
Sa Grade 3, wala nang ganun. Kanya kanya na.
Make sense now because hindi sanay si Anika magread and I accept that it’s my fault. She asks me often to buy her books. Bili naman ako ng bili. Tambay ng library yan. Favorite place niya daw in school. She brings home a different book every week from the school library. Tuwang tuwa ako because nahihilig siya sa books. Malay ko ba na hindi pala niya binabasa lahat! She only scans the pages and looks at the photos. Hindi ko siya natutukan with that. Kamote ako.
Hirap siya to read in English, eh what more pa in Filipino subjects niya like AP?! Olats na olats na talaga tong slang kong anak. Akala mo pagnagsalita, lumaki sa Amerika eh never pa talaga siya nakapunta there. Nakakaloka. She doesn’t speak Filipino that much at home. Kahit Tagalog mo kausapin, English ang sagot. Wala na nga kasing Batibot.
I realized that when I reviewed Anika for her exams and asked her questions. She knew all the answers so I was satisfied that she can do well in her exams. However pala, when the questions are written down already and she has to read them on her own, patay na. She has a hard time reading Filipino words and sentences. After attempting to read it, she can’t understand it that well naman. How can she pick an answer to a question she can’t understand?
Hay naku.
The solution that was suggested to us is for her to read Filipino stories every night. We actually started that kagabi. Alvin and I made a pact to alternate in being with her when she reads. Gawin kakong priority ito. If masanay na siya to read in English and in Filipino, hopefully her grades go up na.
No, I didn’t get mad at Anika. It’s partially my fault because I let her speak lang in English and didn’t train her speaking in Filipino. I just told her that we’ll study harder together. Her Tatay and I will help her kako. Oo naman siya. I also spoke with her tutor. I told her tutor to make Anika read and spell everyday too.
